Overview

This 1.5 training day Care Act Refresher Training for practitioners will cover a refresher on the key aspects and principles of the Care Act, including involving the person as much as possible during the process which highlights a number of key duties. It will look at the link between the Act and how this is translated into effective practice and explores a range of aspects in relation to good assessment and good care and support planning. The course will consider what different types of information can be used in evidence, the factors to take into account when formulating a professional opinion and examine defensible decision making. Linked to this will be a session on what constitutes ethical and effective recording. The training will finish with looking at handling difficult conversations and promoting self-resilience. The sessions are highly participative with delegates working in small groups on a range of case studies, exercises and quizzes. The programme for managers will have the same overall programme but will focus on how they can ensure their respective team members meet the objectives and consistently achieve legal compliance and high standards of practice.

Course Length

1.5 days, normally run as 3 separate half day modules (or 2 full days if classroom based)

Learning Outcomes

Module 1

By the end of this module, delegates will be able to:-

  • Recall the key principles of the Care Act and the duties and powers relating to assessment
  • Identify the nine aspects of wellbeing
  • Highlight the key aspects arising from the Prevention and Information and Advice duties and identify key preventative measures
  • Demonstrate that all aspects related to involving the person as fully as possible have been explored
  • Continue to utilise the strengths based approach and expand the range of questions used, focusing on the person’s skills and strengths, prior to considering their needs and know how to use this approach throughout the customer journey
  • Understand and develop confidence in how to establish outcomes based on identified needs
  • Apply the principles of a good analytical, strengths-based assessment to the assessment documentation

Module 2

  • By the end of this module, delegates will be able to:-
  • Increase analysis, evidence informed decision making, critical thinking and reflective skills within the assessment process
  • Understand the inter-relationship between the Care Act and Mental Capacity Act when undertaking assessments for individuals who may lack capacity
  • Strengthen understanding of the 3 stage eligibility threshold and of the term significant impact
  • Translate identified needs into a strengths based, outcome focused care and support plan, utilising the care and support planning process
  • Consider the range of information to be considered when formulating a professional opinion and be confident that the decision is defensible and that clear, factual evidence is provided to support decisions
  • Ensure that recording is accurate and complete and based on the concept of partnership

Module 3

By the end of this module, delegates will be able to:-

  • Understand support options, explore the range of ways needs can be met and the different ways a Personal Budget can be taken, including Direct Payments
  • Adopt creative solutions in care and support planning
  • Identify and prepare for difficult conversations through considering key points and planning and what to include
  • Consider key messages in a case study where a difficult conversation is taking place
  • Develop strategies for developing resilience
  • Consider tools and practices to create/expand own toolbox, to support self
