Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course participants will:-

• Be familiar with the legal basis of adult safeguarding work
• Be able to apply the principles of the Mental Capacity Act and understand the concepts of making unwise decisions, positive risk taking and the impact these choices may have. Including identifying options open and not open to the public bodies involved.
• Understand the relationship between the local authority’s duties and consent (or lack of consent) from the adult and in which situations the local authority would be under a duty to act despite an absence of consent
• Know when and how to lawfully share information in adult safeguarding work
• Know and understand the potential options to safeguard adults at risk, including:
  • Refusal to engage
  • Executive capacity
  • Families, relationships and risk
  • Coercion and undue influence
• Ensure the views and wishes of the adult are central to the process, including a focus on the adults’ outcomes
• Understand when it would be necessary & appropriate to take legal advice.
