Overview

Down Syndrome is a chromosomal disorder, affecting around 1 in every 1000 babies born in the U.K. In total about 60,000 people are known to be affected by it and this course is designed for individuals who want to ensure best practice in the care, assessment and support of individuals with Down Syndrome, particularly those who support adults with learning difficulties.

The course is suitable for individuals who want to ensure best practice in the care, assessment and support of people with Down Syndrome. Practitioners and frontline staff would particularly benefit and it is especially relevant for those who support adults with learning difficulties

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course participants should be able to:

  • Outline what constitutes Down Syndrome, and how it is diagnosed
  • Have an appreciation of some other conditions that are often associated with Down Syndrome, e.g. challenging behaviour
  • Have an appreciation of co-existing conditions e.g dementia and mental health
  • Describe the effects of legislation, institutionalisation and labelling for people with Down Syndrome
  • Explore methods of communicating effectively with people who have Down Syndrome, including those who have little or no verbal communication
  • Outline the importance of appropriate boundaries when working with service users with Down Syndrome
