Overview
This one day programme aims to give participants a more in depth insight into the care and support needs for people living with Dementia. It will consider the statutory framework within which care and support is offered and an appreciation of the need to deliver person centred care to people living with dementia in order to help them to achieve outcomes promoting their wellbeing. This will be achieved via a range of teaching methods including case study work, group work, discussion and lecture. By the of the course delegates will be able to:-
- Examining the risk of dementia throughout the lifespan and research into its reduction and prevention
- Considering what is meant by Person-centred dementia care drawing on the research of Dawn Brooker and the need to instil human value in care settings
- Examining communication, interaction and behaviour in dementia care drawing on some elements of positive behaviour support to identify strategies for care
- Examining health and wellbeing in dementia care, where this is rooted in the Care Act and how we need to support people to achieve outcomes of wellbeing
- Considering some pharmacological interventions in dementia care and current research exploring our understanding of dementia treatments
- Reflecting upon living well with dementia and promoting independence including the use of Assistive Technology
- Considering equality, diversity and inclusion in dementia care, the social construction of ageing and the risk of people living with dementia being marginalised in the health and care sector
- Considering the law, ethics and safeguarding in dementia care, including the Mental Capacity Act, the Care Act and Continuing Health Care guidance
- Considering end of life care planning for people living with dementia
- Using research and evidence based practice in dementia care
