Overview
This course will enable delegates to work and engage with parents/carers who have any sort of learning disability. Empowering Social Workers to have the confidence to identify and complete assessments with adults with learning disabilities, enabling them to effectively assess parenting capacity and recognise when specialist intervention is required.Who is Engaging Parents and Carers with Learning Disabilities aimed at?

By the end of the session delegates will be able to:-
- Identify the difference between Learning disability and Learning difficulty (to encompass Autism)
- Recognising when cognitive function assessments are required – understanding when they are applicable
- Challenges for this group including gender, ethnicity and protected characteristics
- Learn a range of engagement strategies and tools to ensure that communication and understanding is reached
- Demonstrate knowledge in policy, legislation and guidance
- Explore the power imbalance of professional, family members and dynamics within the family
- Appropriate use of utilising advocates - when to engage and using to best effect
- Empowering both individuals and their support networks to get the best possible outcome for the family
