Overview

The handling of conflict, incidents of workplace bullying, complaints and serious incidents is of real concern within the workplace. It is essential that any investigation carried out is conducted in the correct manner using a professional approach. The purpose of this course is to equip staff with the skills and knowledge to set up and run and report investigations, by adhering to professional protocols.

Who is Investigation Skills aimed at?

Anyone working in the organisation responsible for conducting workplace investigations. Relevant roles may include line managers, human resources and employee relations professionals, and anyone who may be required to undertake a fact-finding exercise or neutral evaluation into a workplace issue.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Explain your healthcare organisation’s responsibilities and the employees’ rights in workplace investigations and relevant legislative and statutory frameworks
  • Identify the ‘ACAS Code of Practice on Discipline and Grievance.’ ‘The Burchell Test.’ ‘The Polkey Principle’ and how to apply the civil standard of proof in a workplace investigation
  • set up and manage a thorough, fair, and compassionate investigation including defining the terms of reference.
  • Create an investigation plan
  • Use active listening, note taking, questioning techniques and summarising.
  • Develop a well-structured investigation report.
  • Gather and assess relevant information.
  • Link the investigation to patient care and provide coaching and mentoring to follow up actions required.

During the course you will be working on case studies and using practical techniques to develop your interview and investigation skills. The session is highly interactive and you will leave the session with a clear set of skills.
