Mental Health Act Course Overview The main aim of this course is to develop and enhance knowledge and understanding of non specialist practitioners in relation to Mental Health Act powers and responsibilities. Understanding the main legislation relevant to Mental Health Law, together with the functions and powers contained in key sections of the Mental Health Act are key components. The course also helps participants to understand the role of the Approved Mental Health Practitioner (AMHP).Who is Mental Health Act aimed at?

On conclusion of the course, participants will:
• Be aware of the main legislation relevant to Mental Health Law and where to find key information
• Understand the functions and powers contained in key sections of the Mental Health Act, including those relevant to gaining access, emergency holding powers, detention and treatment
• Be aware of the different purposes of the Mental Health Act and the Mental Capacity Act and develop a general understanding of how to choose between them and/or use both together lawfully
• Develop a clear overview of community-based powers and responsibilities for care of those who are subject to the Mental Health Act, including CPA, s.117, Guardianship and CTOs
• Understand the role of the Approved Mental Health Practitioner (AMHP)
• Be aware of relevant practice issues and where to find further information for own professional development
