Overview

This one day learning event is aimed at staff who work with children who are self- harming or at risk of self- harming or may have thought of taking their own life. The main purpose of the event to allow discussion of the issues and how practitioners and those looking after children can engage with those who self-harm and effect positive change.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course delegates will be able to:-

  • Understand the reasons children self- harm or contemplate suicide
  • Understand the differences for self-harm and suicidal behaviour in various stages of childhood and the concept of undetermined intent
  • Understand how to respond to children who self- harm and build resilience in them
  • Understand the boundaries of confidentiality and the involvement of parents and carers
  • Understand the role of social media and the internet in how children view self-harming
  • Understand how to assess harm and manage risk
