Understanding Neurodiversity

Overview

This one-day course will enable practitioners to support parents and carers of neurodivergent children to understand their children, foster empathic relationships and create environments that enable children to fulfil their potential.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course delegates will be able to:-

• Explore what is meant by the term neurodiversity.
• Explore the potential differences or difficulties autistic children may experience with social communication.  
• Describe why some neurodivergent children may find it hard to consider hypothetical and abstract concepts and the possible impact of this.
• Understand the process of sensory integration including the difference between hyper and hypo sensitivity
• Explore the different types of situations that might generate anxiety and how to minimise this.
• Become familiar with the strategies to facilitate concentration and focus.
• Understand impulsiveness and how best to help children manage this.
• Explore the importance and role of empathy and positive regard when working with neurodiverse children.
